Toji Shuten is a supporting character of the Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi manga series. He is a Grand Cross and a member of the Demon Realm Special Forces. He is also a Cambion, a half human and half demon hybrid.

He is a major ally during the Demon Realm Infiltration Arc.

Appearance

Toji before becoming an Exorcist

Toji is a tall man with shaggy black hair that’s tied in a long curly ponytail, with his bangs covering his eyes. He wears four earrings on each ear. His attire consists of a formal suit and he is always seen with a cigarette in his mouth.

Due to him being a half demon, Toji's eyes are unique as its pattern has three lines.

Personality

Not much is known about Toji's personality, but he's seen to be more laidback and lax compared to the other examiners, always carrying a smile on his face.

Behind this guise however, Toji seems to have an extreme bloodlust, as shown when he wanted to fight Kiyoshi Harai after watching him beat Senpei Yana with one punch.

Goro Shishido helps Toji while he’s injured

Toji first met Shishido when he was specifically was looking for him. Toji stated he would do whatever Shishido wanted if he lost so Shishido forced him to become a member of the Demon Realm Special Forces after having won against Toji. After having been an Exorcist Toji still hasn't felt like he belonged there due to other Exorcists being skeptical and decided to betray Shishido and sided with the demons to fight against him but ultimately lost again. Even after telling Shishido to kill him Shishido picked Toji up since his life is in his hands now and so they returned to the Demon Realm Special Forces. That is when Toji realized that ever since he met Goro Shishido he has found a place for himself, a home which is worth returning to.

Therefore Toji has much respect for Goro Shishido and his strength, believing him to be stronger than Utsugi Hijiri, the strongest Cross Paladin.

Maki

Toji has deep hatred for the Maki despite being half Maki due to his parents having been killed by the Maki. He seeks revenge and thinks that is the sole reason he has survived until now at least before meeting Goro Shishido.

Plot

Background

Toji was born to a demon father who was one of the Maki and a human mother who was an exorcist. When he was young, his parents were killed because he was half human and half demon. Because of this, Toji was an outcast in the Demon Realm and Human World until he met Goro Shishido.

Abilities

As a Grand Cross, one of the Maki, the most wicked beast in the Demon Realm, and the second strongest member of the Demon Realm Special Forces, Toji is a very powerful and experienced exorcist. Sosuke Hitsugi stated that Toji's strength is the real deal. During his battle with Helze Gaga, Toji was able to overwhelm the demon prodigy and almost kill him.

Expert Combatant: Toji is a highly skilled combatant, being strong enough to defeat multiple demons in Helze Gaga's army and overwhelm Gaga himself in battle.

Enhanced Strength: Toji has incredible physical strength, being able to stop Mako Kusakari's powerful attack with one finger and put a crack in her cross armor. He was also able to send Helze Gaga crashing through multiple buildings with a swing of his spiked bat.

Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Toji is extremely fast, as shown when he appeared behind Sosuke Hitsugi in an instant. He was even able to speed blitz Helze Gaga. He also has incredible reflexes, being able to easily react to a powerful downward kick from Mako Kusakari as well as multiple shots fired by Hitsugi.

Enhanced Durability: Toji is an incredibly resilient man, remaining completely unscathed from a point blank Perfect Blue. Leviathan attack from Hitsugi.

Enhanced Endurance: Toji has incredible endurance and stamina. He was able to continue fighting after taking multiple attacks to the face from Helze Gaga.

Stealth: As a member of the Demon Realm Special Forces, Toji relies on stealth to move around in the Demon Realm. Due to being a half demon, Toji's scent is different from others and he doesn't need to wear MAKA 1 clothes when entering the demon realm.

High Precept Power: As a Grand Cross, one of the Maki, the most wicked beast of the Demon Realm, and the second strongest member of the Demon Realm Special Forces, Toji possesses a tremendous amount of precept power. His percept power is strong enough to alert a powerful exorcist such as Yohko Ono, the deputy commander of the Iron-blooded Knights, who noted that his bloodlust was showing. When he uses his full power, Toji's percept power takes on the appearance of a demon’s face.

Exorcist Techniques

Oni Fire (鬼火(おにび), Onibi, lit. Hellfire): Toji can create and control powerful black flames. Helze Gaga recognized this ability to belong to the Maki, the most wicked beast in the Demon Realm.

Oni Fire, Second Form. Marumera (鬼火(おにび)二式(にしき)・炎獄螺旋(マルメラ), Onibi Nishiki・Marumera, lit. Oni Fire, Second Form: Hellfire Spiral): Toji unleashes a large swirl of black flames. To activate the technique, Toji makes a hand seal with his right fist and left hand with the index and middle fingers straight. This technique was strong enough to overpower a demon beasts fire and take it down.

Oni Fire, Fourth Form. Mevius (鬼火(おにび)四式(よんしき)・炎獄牢(メビウス), Onibi Yonshiki・Mebiusu, lit. Oni Fire, Fourth Form: Hellfire Prison): Toji creates four large orbs of black flames around his enemies to restrain them and stop their movements. To activate the technique, Toji simply claps his hands once.

Oni Fire, Fifth Form. Amesupi (鬼火(おにび)五式(ごしき)・炎獄豪雨(アメスピ), Onibi Goshiki・Amesupi, lit. Oni Fire, Fifth Form: Hellfire Torrential Rain): Toji unleashes a large rain of black flames against his enemy. For activating this technique Toji covers the right fist with the left open palm. Also it was mentioned that the attack is similar to a normal fire rain, which is a rare occurrence even in the demon world.

Ultimate Evil, First Form. Akamaru (極魔(ウルマ)一式(いっしき)・炎獄赤鬼(アカマル), Uruma Isshiki・Akamaru, lit. Ultimate Evil, First Form: Hellfire Red Oni): Toji attacks his enemy with a powerful finger flick imbued with black flames.

Ultimate Evil, Second Form. Rakisuto (極魔(ウルマ)二式(にしき)・焰獄閃弾(ラキスト), Uruma Nishiki・Rakisuto, lit. Ultimate Evil, Second Form: Hellfire Flash Bullet): Toji fires a powerful condensed ball of black flames at his enemy. This attack is extremely fast.

Ultimate Evil, Third Form. Setta (極魔(ウルマ)三式(さんしき)・焰獄刹駄(セッタ), Uruma Sanshiki・Setta, lit. Ultimate Evil, Third Form: Hellfire Temple Packhorse): Toji imbues his legs with black flames and charges towards his enemy with extreme speed. This attack is strong enough to send his enemy crashing through multiple buildings.

Ultimate Evil, Fourth Form. Hi-Lite (極魔(ウルマ)四式(よんしき)・焰獄爆発(ハイライト), Uruma Yonshiki・Hairaito, lit. Ultimate Evil, Fourth Form: Hellfire Explosion): Toji fires a precise attack of black flames at his enemy.

Etymology

• The name Toji Shuten, written as Shuten Toji 酒天童児, is likely a reference to the yokai 酒呑童子.
